Underwater Cave Research
Welcome to the website for the research laboratory of Dr. Jim Garey in the Department of Cell Biology, Microbiology and Molecular Biology at the University of South Florida. Our laboratory investigates coastal caves, vents and sinkholes as well as inland soils worldwide. This research includes field work, which often requires diving into underwater caves and sinks to collect samples and place instrumentation but some may be done by surface collecting of samples. In the lab we carry out water chemistry measurements, stable isotopes analyses, and use DNA analyses and sequencing to learn how microbial communities change over time with varying geochemical and hydrological conditions. We also investigate geochemistry and hydrology of spring systems. Earlier work in my lab focused on molecular phylogeny of the animal kingdom and biodiversity/biogeography of plants and animals.
